I-House Berkeley is a vibrant residential and program centre affiliated with the United States’ top-ranked public university. Thriving on the energy of the San Francisco Bay Area and the adjacent Silicon Valley, I-House Berkeley sparks and engenders a lifetime of friendships and personal connections for all who decide to reside in its historic facility.

We accommodate upper-division undergraduate and graduate students in addition to visiting scholars and post-docs for a minimum stay of one semester during the academic year and for summer sessions of various lengths. The stunning facility, dating to 1930 and built in the Spanish Revival architectural style, has been extensively updated and renovated over the last two decades.

Short-term visitors may be accommodated in the Ambassador Suite, and both the Dining Commons and Café are open to walk-in guests during academic terms.

I-House Berkeley is home to 590 students during the fall and spring semesters and another 500 residents during the various summer terms.  All residents participate in our integrated dining program as it is the hallmark of a residency here. Over the 12-month calendar year, I-House also sponsors more than 100 cultural events and related activities for its residents and guests including Sunday Suppers which bring the entire community together in celebration of the I-House ideals several times each academic year.

Residents of I-House enjoy:

  • Forays across the bay to San Francisco
  • Field trips across California to places such as Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park along with homestays in the Central Valley in affiliation with Rotary International
  • Films, lectures, and music concerts
  • Dance classes, yoga, and movement workshops
  • Culturally-themed coffee hours and dinners
  • Credit-bearing courses and workshops in intercultural leadership and global citizenship
  • On-site library, dining commons, computer and game rooms

I-House Berkeley welcomes guests and visitors who wish to tour our facility, enjoy a meal in our Café or Dining Commons, and see in person how our mission pervades every aspect of life in this place.

Our Mission since 1930 is now more important than it has ever been:

“Fostering cross-cultural respect, understanding, lifelong friendships and leadership skills for the promotion of a more tolerant and peaceful world.”
